Bear Fire Initial Attack Burn Injury 2021

    While engaged in initial attack operations on the Bear Fire on the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests, Arizona, a crewmember on a 10-person initial-attack hand-crew sustained a small 1st degree burn to the tip of nose. A wind shift had resulted in the flaming front pushing flames and hot gas toward this individual and crew. The patient was initially treated by EMTs, then hiked to a remote helispot and was transported by an agency Type 3 helicopter to a hospital in Safford, Arizona. The individual’s burn was treated, airway and lungs checked, and was then released and is in good condition.
