  • Description:

On April 11, 2024, fire personnel from the US Fish and Wildlife Service conducted a prescribed burn on the Browns Park National Wildlife Refuge in northwestern Colorado. Shortly after ignitions began, several small slopovers necessitated altering firing patterns. At 1140 the fire crossed the eastern fireline and ultimately burned an area of 16 acres on federal lands. Contingency resources were called and successfully contained the slopover as firing continued on the prescribed fire unit. Ignitions on the unit were completed at 1654. Due to the effective response by holding and contingency resources, the prescribed fire was not declared a wildfire.

During operations on the Hoy Prescribed Fire, a UTV carrying the Prescribed Fire Burn Boss Type 2 (trainee) and Agency Administrator rolled over, injuring the Agency Administrator. This event is documented in a separate RLS here.
