On the evening of December 4th, 2017, a localized wind event known as a “Mono wind” descended upon the Sierra National Forest, Bass Lake Ranger District, in the general area of Cascadel Woods. This area is situated approximately three miles to the east of North Fork, CA. Sustained winds between 25-30 mph with gusts to 55 mph caused a prescribed fire in the Whiskey Ridge Fuel Break (consisting of the Mormon and Ponderosa units) system to leave the unit area boundary. District personnel on scene with concurrence of the local agency administrator made the decision to declare the prescribed pile burn a wildfire.
