On April 1, 2021 the Arapaho Roosevelt NFs and Pawnee National Grassland in Colorado responded to a smoke report with cooperators near Gross Reservoir Dam. The District had initiated a 79-acre pile burn project in the same area on March 21. When personnel arrived, the fire was spreading to the northeast, fanned by breezy and dry conditions. Fire managers recognized at that point that the fire had originated from a pile that had been ignited 11 days earlier. The Forsythe II Unit 51 pile project was declared the Gross Dam Wildfire. The Fire was contained at 2000hrs at 8.65 acres of non-Forest Service land. No improvements were damaged or threatened.
